Coach Joe Lapchick, a Hall of Famer, quit because of stress-related issues with a record of 26-25. His successor, Vince Boryla, closed out the season 9-12. That was enough to get into a third-place tiebreaker game for a spot in the semifinals, but the Knicks lost that game to the Syracuse Nationals. Three seasons earlier, Braun, Gallatin and Boryla led them to the N.B.A. finals. 1966-67 (36-45, .444) The Knicks had not made the playoffs for seven seasons, but they advanced behind Walt Bellamy and the rookie Willis Reed. It helped that eight of 10 teams made the playoffs. Reed certainly made the most of his first shot at the postseason, averaging 27.5 points and 13.8 rebounds in a first-round loss to the Boston Celtics. Bill Bradley, Walt Frazier and Earl Monroe were still around, and Phil Jackson was having one of his best seasons as a player, but the Knicks won nine fewer games than the season before and were knocked out of the playoffs in the first round by the Houston Rockets. The next season, they dropped to 38-44 and did not make the playoffs. 1987-88 (38-44, .463) Rick Pitino’s first Knicks team was below average on offense and defense. But led by Patrick Ewing, Mark Jackson and Gerald Wilkins, the Knicks won 14 games more than they had the previous season. A first-round playoff loss to the Celtics — the first taste of the postseason for Ewing — did not slow the team’s progress, as Pitino led the Knicks to 52 wins the next season before heading back to college basketball. 1990-91 (39-43, .476) Ewing had one of his most productive seasons, but he was mostly a one-man show with only three teammates averaging double digits in points a game. Coach Stu Jackson was fired 15 games into the season with a record of 7-8, and John MacLeod finished 32-35 before being swept, 3-0, in the first round by the Chicago Bulls. The next season, Pat Riley came to town and reinvented New York basketball. 2003-4 (39-43, .476) This Knicks team most resembles the current squad, making the playoffs as much because of the failings of others as anything they did to help themselves. Allan Houston exited after playing 50 games (never returning to full health) and Stephon Marbury arrived midseason via trade. Marbury, a New York native, briefly excited fans, but a crushing first-round sweep to the Nets took away the enthusiasm, and the team did not qualify for the playoffs again for another seven seasons.
